Heatsink Selection Calculator

POSThttps://rftools.io/api/py/v1/calculate

Slug heatsink-selection. Calculate the required heatsink thermal resistance (θSA) to keep a device junction below its maximum temperature. Use this to select an appropriate heatsink.

Inputs

Send every one of these in inputs, in the units shown. Most are required: a call without one is refused (400) and costs nothing; one the calculator can do without takes the default shown. An input outside its range is still computed and flagged in the provenance.

Inputs of heatsink-selection
NameUnitRangeDefaultDescription
pdnumberWat least 0.0015Power dissipated in the device that must be removed
tanumber°C−55 … 12540Maximum ambient (surrounding air) temperature
tjMaxnumber°C50 … 200125Maximum allowable junction temperature from device datasheet
thetaJCnumber°C/Wat least 03Junction-to-case thermal resistance from device datasheet
thetaCSnumber°C/Wat least 00.5Case-to-heatsink thermal resistance (thermal interface material)
numLayersnumbernone0 … 60Thermal layers in series between the case and the heatsink besides θ_CS, such as an insulating pad, a spreader or a board with thermal vias (0–6)
layer1Thetanumber°C/W0 … 1001Thermal resistance of extra layer 1, in series between the case and the heatsink
layer2Thetanumber°C/W0 … 1001Thermal resistance of extra layer 2, in series between the case and the heatsink
layer3Thetanumber°C/W0 … 1001Thermal resistance of extra layer 3, in series between the case and the heatsink
layer4Thetanumber°C/W0 … 1001Thermal resistance of extra layer 4, in series between the case and the heatsink
layer5Thetanumber°C/W0 … 1001Thermal resistance of extra layer 5, in series between the case and the heatsink
layer6Thetanumber°C/W0 … 1001Thermal resistance of extra layer 6, in series between the case and the heatsink

Outputs

Returned in values, by key. A value that is unbounded or undefined is null.

Outputs of heatsink-selection
FieldUnitDescription
thetaSARequiredheadline°C/WMaximum heatsink-to-ambient thermal resistance required. Select a heatsink with θSA ≤ this value.
tjActual°CJunction temperature achieved with the exactly required heatsink
deltaTJ°CTemperature margin below maximum junction temperature
thetaJS°C/WThe stack between the junction and the heatsink: θ_JC + θ_CS + the extra layers
heatsinkTemp°CTemperature of the heatsink where the device mounts, with the exactly required heatsink: T_J − P_D·θ_JS

Calling it

  • Calculate: one call, the request and response in full, and its errors.
  • Batch: this calculator with others, or a sweep, in one request.
  • Solve for a target: the value of one input that brings an output to a target.
