Motor Driver Power Dissipation

POSThttps://rftools.io/api/py/v1/calculate

Slug motor-driver-power. Calculate motor driver IC or discrete MOSFET power dissipation including conduction loss and switching loss at a given PWM frequency.

Inputs

Send every one of these in inputs, in the units shown. Most are required: a call without one is refused (400) and costs nothing; one the calculator can do without takes the default shown. An input outside its range is still computed and flagged in the provenance.

transitionTimenumbernsat least 050Rise or fall time of the hard-switched FET, taken equal: TI SLVA504A's 0.5·V·I·(t_r + t_f)·f is then V·I·t_sw·f
motorCurrentMinnumberAat least 00The lowest RMS motor current in service; 0 for the nominal.
motorCurrentMaxnumberAat least 00The highest RMS motor current in service; 0 for the nominal. The FETs' current and loss are taken at it.
supplyVoltageMinnumberVat least 00The lowest supply in service; 0 for the nominal.
supplyVoltageMaxnumberVat least 00The highest supply in service; 0 for the nominal. The FETs' drain-source rating is taken at it.
tDeadnumberns0 … 100000100The time both FETs of the switching half bridge are off at each edge, when the recirculating FET's body diode carries the current (TI SLVA504A eq. 3).
vBodynumberV0 … 51Body Diode Forward Voltage

Outputs

Returned in values, by key. A value that is unbounded or undefined is null.

FieldUnitDescription
conductionLossWI²·R_DS(on); two FETs conduct at any instant
switchingLossWV·I·t_sw·f, in the one FET hard-switched each period
totalLossPerFetWThe larger of I²·R (the high side that conducts all period) and I²·R·D + P_sw (the low side, which also switches)
totalLossBridgeheadlineW2·I²·R + P_sw (TI SLVA504A); the gate drive is reported apart

Calling it

  • Calculate: one call, the request and response in full, and its errors.
  • Batch: this calculator with others, or a sweep, in one request.
  • Solve for a target: the value of one input that brings an output to a target.
