Edge-Coupled Embedded Microstrip Calculator

POSThttps://rftools.io/api/py/v1/calculate

Slug edge-coupled-embedded. Calculate differential and common-mode impedance for an edge-coupled pair under soldermask, coating or prepreg — with a separate effective permittivity per mode, so the skew the cover introduces is visible.

Inputs

Send every one of these in inputs, in the units shown. Most are required: a call without one is refused (400) and costs nothing; one the calculator can do without takes the default shown. An input outside its range is still computed and flagged in the provenance.

Inputs of edge-coupled-embedded
NameUnitRangeDefaultDescription
traceWidthnumbermm0.02 … 100.2Trace Width
traceSpacingnumbermm0.02 … 100.2Trace Spacing (edge to edge)
substrateHeightnumbermmat least 0.020.2Dielectric between the traces and the reference plane below
coverThicknessnumbermmat least 00.025Soldermask, coating or prepreg over the traces. Zero gives a bare surface pair.
coverDielectricnumbernoneat least 13.5Cover Dielectric Constant
copperThicknessnumberμmat least 535Copper Thickness
dielectricConstnumbernoneat least 14.2Substrate Dielectric Constant
frequencynumberGHz0.001 … 3002.4Used only for the guided wavelength of the differential (odd) mode; the impedances do not depend on it in this model

Outputs

Returned in values, by key. A value that is unbounded or undefined is null.

FieldUnitDescription
diffImpedanceheadlineΩDifferential Impedance
commonImpedanceΩCommon-Mode Impedance
oddImpedanceΩOdd-Mode Impedance
evenImpedanceΩEven-Mode Impedance
uncoupledImpedanceΩSingle Trace Without Its Partner
erEffOddnoneOdd-Mode Effective Er
erEffEvennoneDiffers from the odd mode because the two modes put different amounts of field in the air above the cover
propagationDelayps/mmPropagation Delay (odd mode)
propagationDelayEvenps/mmThe gap between the two is the mode skew that converts differential signal into common mode
inValidatedRangenone1 when the geometry lies inside the range the model was checked against a field solver
guidedWavelengthmmWavelength of the differential (odd) mode on the pair at the frequency, c/(f·√εeff,odd)
quarterWavelengthmmQuarter Wavelength (odd mode)

Calling it

  • Calculate: one call, the request and response in full, and its errors.
  • Batch: this calculator with others, or a sweep, in one request.
  • Solve for a target: the value of one input that brings an output to a target.
